On the Record: Stronger, Safer Neighborhoods
Annise Parker knows that good jobs and safe neighborhoods make Houston a great place to raise a family. That’s why she passed an ordinance cracking down on motels frequented by prostitutes near churches and neighborhoods and why she has a plan for getting tough on gangs on the streets and in our schools. As a City Councilmember and as Controller, Annise has set priorities with our tax dollars to strengthen neighborhoods by investing in parks and recreation, after-school programs, libraries, and police and firefighters. Annise:
- Targeted inefficiency and waste in the operation of the Houston Emergency Center, 311 Information System, Fire Code Inspection Division, Police Department’s overtime management systems, garbage collection, and animal welfare and control
- Pushed the 911 emergency center to restructure, leading to better response times to critical emergencies at a reduced cost
- Helped oversee the cleanup of the city’s troubled crime lab
- Led the fight on the city council to shut down motels that cater to prostitutes
- Fought to limit billboards and promote trees to make the city more beautiful
- Has consistently advocated for quality-of-life improvements like more parks, cleaner air and expanded after-school programs to make our city more family-friendly.
- Fought to preserve neighborhood character and strengthen deed restrictions.
- Advocated for clear standards to prevent controversies like the proposed Ashby High Rise
