In December 2008, more than 2,000 Houstonians helped me select five Houston charities to receive $1,000 each from my campaign funds:

• Child Advocates
• Houston Area Women’s Center
• Houston Food Bank
• Houston Zoo
• SPCA

The response was great - and the need is even greater.

Almost 150 Houston nonprofits were suggested as potential recipients in response to an email to my supporters. These organizations are doing heroic work and need our help. That’s why I will ask each person or organization contributing to my campaign to also make a contribution to a Houston nonprofit organization. And each month, I will feature a group of nonprofit organizations in my Controller’s newsletter, and ask my readers to support them.
