Houston Chronicle Live Zoom: Meet Annise Parker
Former Houston Mayor Annise Parker joined Houston Chronicle reporter John Lomax for a live conversation about her campaign for Harris County Judge.
Q & A
Q
What specifically does Annise hope to achieve if she wins this election for judge?
A
I want the county to be safer, more secure, and able to weather the storms that are coming at us- both natural and those coming from D.C. and Austin.
Q
Will you treat homelessness like you did when you were mayor?
A
Houston is still considered the gold standard. During my time as Mayor, we reduced homelessness by over 60%, virtually ending veteran homelessness. I am still consulted by other cities on how they can address homelessness and do better.
Q
Would you agree that severe housing stock shortages at lower income levels is also a major issue in Harris County?
A
Agree! We are not going to solve the problem without housing at every price point and wraparound services for those who cannot live independently in their homes.
Q
How will the state’s push for redrawing district lines affect Houston and Harris County?
A
Redistricting will affect congressional districts but not Harris County itself. Still, this is an effort to disenfranchise Black and Brown voters. The Harris County Judge and all local elected officials should speak up and speak out about this.
